With so much pressure from the media, peers, and internal and external factors, it’s easy to understand why youth sometimes make choices that have negative consequences. NWFS staff strives to make the after-school programs a safe and healthy environment for youth to ask the questions they don’t normally feel comfortable asking. Through physical activities, fun games, and discussions, students are able to dive into a multitude of topics and get real answers to equip them for the difficult decisions that come up in adolescence. Along with decision-making development, the after-school programs provide a space for students to practice academic responsibility with set homework times and tutors to aid in the process. NWFS monitors academic achievement and provides positive reinforcement for those improving and excelling. Fieldtrips are another component of many after-school programs at NWFS; youth not only work hard throughout the year but also get to have fun exploring Portland and the surrounding area. Fieldtrips to OMSI, Clackamas Aquatic Park, and Wild Waves are among some of the trips students have ventured on. Poder Joven 2011-2012 School Calendar
